Supernatural is an American dark fantasy drama television series created by Eric Kripke. It was first broadcast on September 13, 2005, on The WB, and subsequently became part of successor The CW's lineup. Starring Jared Padalecki as Sam Winchester and Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester, the series follows the two brothers as they hunt demons, ghosts, monsters, and other supernatural beings. The series was produced by Warner Bros. Television, in association with Wonderland Sound and Vision. Along with Kripke, executive producers have been McG, Robert Singer, Phil Sgriccia, Sera Gamble, Jeremy Carver, John Shiban, Ben Edlund, and Adam Glass. Former executive producer and director Kim Manners died of lung cancer during production of the fourth season.[5]

The series was filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, and surrounding areas. It was in development for nearly ten years, as creator Kripke spent several years unsuccessfully pitching it. The pilot was viewed by an estimated 5.69 million viewers,[6] and the ratings of the first four episodes prompted The WB to pick up the series for a full season. Kripke planned the series for three seasons but later expanded it to five. The fifth season concluded the series' main storyline,[7] and Kripke departed the series as showrunner.[8] The series continued on for 10 more seasons with new showrunners, including Sera Gamble, Jeremy Carver, Robert Singer and Andrew Dabb.[9] With its eleventh season, Supernatural became the longest-running American live-action fantasy TV series.[10] The series was renewed for a fifteenth and final season that consisted of 20 episodes,[11][12] and premiered on October 10, 2019.[13] The series concluded on November 19, 2020, with 327 episodes aired.

After their father goes missing during a "hunting trip," Dean Winchester tracks down his brother Sam at Stanford University and they begin to live a life on the road, in Dean's black 1967 Chevrolet Impala. However, their father is not a typical hunter: he hunts supernatural creatures like ghosts, vampires, and spirits, and has trained his sons to do the same. Along the way, Sam and Dean save innocent people, fight creatures and ghosts, and collect clues to their father's whereabouts.

"Carry On" is the series finale of the American television series Supernatural. It serves as the 20th episode of the fifteenth season, and the 327th overall. The episode was originally broadcast on The CW on November 19, 2020, and was written by showrunner and executive producer Andrew Dabb and directed by co-showrunner Robert Singer. The show stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles as Sam and Dean Winchester, two brothers who hunt demons, ghosts, monsters, and other supernatural beings. The episode shows Sam and Dean six months after the events of the previous episode, as they begin their final hunt together which ends in tragedy.

In January 2019, the CW renewed the series for a fifteenth season. In March, various cast members revealed that the new season of the show would be its last, with the series finale scheduled to air on May 18, 2020. However, production was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic with two episodes left to film, which resumed in August, and concluded in September 2020. The finale, which was rescheduled to air on November 19, 2020, was preceded by a special titled The Long Road Home. In its initial broadcast, "Carry On" received positive reviews from critics, who deemed the episode a satisfactory conclusion to the series.

The series finale was originally set to air on May 18, 2020.[4] However, in March 2020, Warner Bros. Television shut down production on the series due to the COVID-19 pandemic with two episodes, including the finale, left to go.[5] Showrunner and executive producer Andrew Dabb revealed that the season would go on hiatus after episode 13 of the season, broadcast on March 23. Dabb clarified that the series had completed production on 18 of the 20 episodes for the season, but the post-production process could not be completed on the episodes because of the shutdown in production. Dabb also assured that the series' cast and crew, The CW, and Warner Bros. were fully committed to filming and airing the unproduced episodes with its proper finale.[6]

Even so, "Supernatural" has earned far less cultural cred over the years despite the fact that the show has lasted twice as long as "Buffy." Longevity does not guarantee cultural impact or appreciation, of course. Let's also acknowledge that that "Buffy" is personally beloved by a number of critics and scholars working today because it was a vanguard of television's golden age, and it dared to sculpt a goofy cult film adaptation into seven seasons' worth of grand and emotionally complex serialized stories on a pair of small, low-rated broadcast networks.

Taking all of this into account, it's no surprise that "Supernatural" appeals to both sides of the political spectrum, although it is particularly popular among Democrats. In the 2020 edition of E-Poll Market Research's annual list of top programs among viewers identifying as Democrats and Republicans, it tops the list of favorite broadcast TV series among Democrats, followed by "This Is Us." Among Republicans, it ranks sixth. ("This Is Us" is No. 1. )

After 15 seasons and 327 episodes, "Supernatural" ends as the longest-running genre series in all of American broadcast TV. That puts it in the same ranks as "CSI," "ER" and "Criminal Minds," each of which also lasted for 15 years. The only other currently airing live-action series that have lasted longer are "Grey's Anatomy" (17 seasons), "NCIS" (18), and "Law & Order: SVU" (22).

The long-running journey of Sam and Dean Winchester reaches the end of the road on Thursday, November 19 (9:00-10:00pm ET/PT), following a special celebration of the Winchesters and the angels and demons, the deities and monsters that have made the series so beloved on SUPERNATURAL: THE LONG WAY HOME (8:00-9:00pm ET/PT).

The long and winding road of Supernatural came to an end back in November 2020 after 15 seasons, and the series finale seemed like it pretty definitively ended the stories of Sam and Dean Winchester. The brothers were both dead and in the afterlife by the end of the finale, along with a whole lot of other characters, although most did not appear on screen. Now, however, Jensen Ackles is already bringing Supernatural back to The CW less than a year after the show ended, and in a surprising way.
